(1817-1882)
Born into a Roman Catholic family in Dublin, and although he considered the church and law, he turned to literature. He contributed his first poem"My Wishes"-to the Dublin Satirist when he was seventeen, and in 1843, he started contributing a series of political verse to the Nation, with the pen name of "Desmond." He was energetic in supporting the cause for national reform and supported the Young Ireland party rally in 1845. He died at Blackrock, near Dublin. He edited Poets and Dramatists of Ireland (1864) and the Book of Irish Ballads (1869). In 1881 he received the medal of the Royal Academy of Spain for his translations of the Spanish dramatist Pedro Calderon De La Barca: Justina, 1848; Dramas, 1853; Love, the Greatest Enchantment, 1861; Mysteries of Corpus Christi, 1867; The Two Lovers of Heaven, 1870; and The Wonder-working Magician, 873.
